I want your feedback!!

Hey guys!

I’ve got some things that I want to talk to you about and I would really, really appreciate your feedback here!

So today I stumbled upon a quite lengthy thread somewhere where people were discussing beauty bloggers that they liked/didn’t like and why they did or didn’t like them. Honestly, the whole thread was mostly specific things that they didn’t like from specific beauty bloggers but it got me thinking.

I work hard on my blog, videos, etc. and while I honestly love doing it, I’m not solely doing this for my own entertainment. I also want to help others find products, honest reviews, tutorials, tips, everything beauty related! I want to be a good resource for makeup addicts and newbies alike and I want to be someone you can trust.

In this thread a lot of the comments were like “Oh, I don’t like X’s writing style. I don’t like Y’s swatches. I don’t like Z’s tutorials.” etc. I want this blog to be successful and while I realize that I can never please everyone, I do want to make my readers happy! With that being said, I’d really love some honest feedback! Are there certain things you love about this blog? Things you don’t like? Things you wish I’d start? Things you wish I’d do more of? Things that you wish I’d do differently? Let me know about it!

On that note, I always want to be honest with you guys so if you have any questions for me or wish I’d make a post or a section explaining anything in more detail, let me know about that too!

Okay, and one last topic! I was thinking about adding a personal section to my blog where I would blog about random things about my life that don’t involve makeup! Life events, excursions, thoughts, dinner, pets, just whatever strikes my fancy! Sultry Suburbia will alwaysΒ be first and foremost a beauty blog though so my personal posts would be few and far between in comparison to my beauty posts. But before I got into any of that, I wanted to hear my viewers thoughts!

If you guys for whatever reason don’t feel comfortable commenting here, feel free to email at ashley@sultrysuburbia, DM me on IG, FB, however you want! I’m all ears!

Much love! <3

  1. Hi Ashley! I’m really glad you made this post, because this has fast become one of my favorite and most trusted blogs (I started reading after seeing your posts on makeupaddiction!) and it’s always nice to know that the people writing the blogs appreciate reader feedback. One of my favorite aspects of your blog are the reviews; I like your writing style because it’s not too formal/technical, it just reads like how someone would describe a product to their friends, if that makes sense. I also really love that you do a little overview and number score before the review (it’s great for when I’m curious about a product, but not THAT curious haha.) Your photos and swatches are also always amazing, which is much appreciated. This isn’t really a critique, but I hope you’ll still be doing step by step photo tutorials instead of switching over to just videos, because those are easier to follow sometimes for me (and some others I know as well.) I think more personal-ish posts would be a great idea because you seem fun and awesome and I’d love to know a little more about you (hope that doesn’t sound creepy lol!) This got pretty long oops haha, but yeah, thanks for being awesome!

    1. I second this comment completely!

Ashley, your blog is also a favorite of mine because of how often and consistently you post. Thanks for being a great voice in the makeup world. πŸ™‚

    2. Thank you so so much for all of the awesome feedback!! And don’t worry! While I definitely plan on making more videos in the future, I know that many people prefer pictorials so I’m going to try to keep a nice balance of video tutorials to pictorials to try to keep everyone happy. Definitely think I’m going to get around to the personal section too soon. =)

  2. I think it’d be really very important and cool if you would close caption your videos. This will make your videos both easier to understand for all but also more accessible for those who are deaf/hard of hearing. Here’s a video from Rikki Poynter who is a deaf makeup/vlog YouTuber that explains it better than I could https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKjS-L7k33I

    1. This is such a great idea, i second this. Especially because sometimes i want to watch the videos but cant play the sound due to my surroundings. I would love the captions.

    2. I honestly had never even considered that so thank you so much for bringing it to my attention! I watched that video and I’m going to start CCing my future videos. Thank you for the insight! <3

  3. Hey Ashley! I love your blog and videos! Keep up the good work! πŸ˜€ Your makeup is awesome, I love your originality and the amazing creativity you put into your looks. I like the idea of doing some more personal posts, because I think it’s always fun to know a little bit more about a blogger’s personal life, aside from the topic they’re blogging about …I’m a nosy person πŸ˜‰

    1. Haha, aren’t we all? =P I’ll probably start a personal section as soon as I figure out exactly what I want to blog about there.

  4. I don’ really have any CC. I love your pictures, they definitely seem true to color and the way you rate something is nice to see as well. I love your blog!

  5. Honestly, I love all the looks you do but I would really love to see more tutorials (not pictorials). Your looks are honestly amazing and I try to replicate but it just ain’t happening sista. I would love more videos with detailed instructions so i can attempt to do it on my own. Especially if said tutorials have the items you use listed as colors and type as opposed to specifically being a certain shade from a certain palette that I may or may not own. There is nothing worse than watching a tutorial, really wanting to recreate it but not knowing what to use in place of an item that the artist used because you don’t own that particular palette/shadow.
Asides from that, I have no real feedback at the moment. I am loving what you are doing and how you always make sure to respond to your followers and hear what they are saying. Not a lot of people do that now a days and it really makes a difference to me!

    1. And I prefer pictorials to tutorials, because I don’t have the attention span to watch videos most of the time πŸ™‚

Overall I’ve really been enjoying your blog – no real critiques! Honesty and clear photos are the most important things for me, and you have both.

    2. Thank you! I definitely plan on making more video tutorials and while I’m still new to videos, I’ll try to figure out a way to better describe/show/list what I’m using.

And always! I’m writing for my readers! <3

  6. Hiya girl,
I love everything about ur blog and the best part is that u strive to improve and u r succeding at it.
A personal section is always welcome,it lets u connect more to ur readers and vice versa
Just carry on whatever u r doing ,u r growing everyday.
Ps:i m ur true loyalist reader in awe of ur talent and truly inspired by u

  7. Hmm anything I would like to see changing? I can’t think about something. Your photos are good quality and your swatches are to die for. The only ‘ complain’ I must have is the length of the videos. I prefer videos of 10minutes or so. 20 minutes is for me too much. That’s what I prefer. But beside that, your blog/youtube is fantastic πŸ™‚ The personal section is a good option I think. Would love to get to know you better.
(Sorry for my bad English! I hope you understand me haha.)

    1. Oh, you’re English is lovely! And thank you! I have to say I agree about the length of the videos. I just have to work on getting better at being faster/cutting them down. =P

  8. Hi Ashley,

I think the suggestions about closed captioning are a good idea and I think just doing your best to reach a wider audience is always the best course of action. Its been awesome to watch your beauty blogger following grow from you just starting and posting on r/makeupaddiction to having several thousand followers on instagram.

I think adding a section about your personal life would be a nice addition to your blog. For the people I follow in the beauty community I do enjoy hearing about their personal lives and I definitely think its a good move if you want people to find you more relevant and able to relate to.

  9. First of all, your blog is definitely one of my favorites and if you continued to carry it on the way you do now, I would have very little to complain about. I would say I love your pictorials and hope you never stop them! I do like video tutorials, but I just find pictorials easier to follow along with and I can take my time rather than pause all the time. I also just hope you maintain this blog and don’t move too far away from it as you do more videos and are active on sites like instagram. I’m just not as into those as I am in going to a blog and following along that way. I think your reviews are fantastic, I like the number scores you use combined with your impressions in paragraph form. I like how your write, it’s simple and straight-forward. I’ve given you this feedback before, but I really do love when for any kind of look posted, a list of all products and tools used are given, along with a description of how to recreate the look. I think another thing that might be cool is knowing sort of what to expect from the blog, like if you have a special look coming up in a few days, you could let us know or let us know what reviews are in the works.

    1. Thank you, Cat! I definitely won’t be straying from the pictorials! It seems like some people prefer them while others prefer videos so I’ll try to keep a nice balance of both and hopefully keep everyone happy. πŸ˜‰ I also really appreciate your idea about letting you guys know what is coming and I’ll try to keep you all in the loop about future posts!

  10. I love your blog and tutorials. I feel they are easy to follow. Would you consider a picture of whatever eye shadow you are using vs. just a description? I don’t know if that makes sense! Thanks!

  11. love reading your blogs and stuff makeup is beautiful… Need to send my wife some suggestions… Hint hint …. Lol

  12. This is kinda niche, but I would love to see you do some reviews on asian/korean beauty products! They tend to have the cutest packaging (just bought some on memebox based mostly on the packaging..), but I’m not sure what the quality is compared to American products. Most reviews of asian products are from bloggers who almost exclusively use asian products, so I feel like there’s less of a point of comparison. Sephora has recently started supplying some Korean makeup (ex. Tony Moly), and memebox just raised $15 mil to expand in the US, so I feel like it’s a growing trend!

Aside from that, I think your work is just great! Step-by-step tutorials and more personal stuff sounds good too :).

    1. Thank you, girl! I actually hadn’t really considered that before. I don’t think I own a single Asian beauty product so it would be interesting to see what I thought of them vs. the western brands that I typically use. I definitely should check into getting my paws on some things!

  13. Another comment! Just going off what I said before, maybe you could pit a Asian product vs an American product, since some of the Asian lip and skin care products look like copy cats (I’m not sure if it’s intentional or what! But some of the designs look very similar). Also, skincare related stuff (your favorite products) would be cool too! Also, you should contact memebox, maybe they’d send you some things, as they like to partner with bloggers. Sorry for all the ideas, lacking sleep so #nofilter. xP

  14. I would love to see more step by step photos, I enjoy them a lot and feel like it’s easier for me to recreate your looks. Also, keep up the good work with the reviews, they are helpful and I trust your opinion. πŸ™‚

    1. I’ll definitely be making more pictorials in the future! And thank you! It’s awesome to hear that you guys trust my opinion on things. I always try to be honest with you all about products.

  15. I so love that you asked for commentary, but I can’t think of anything. Two things that drive me nuts are people who have tons of spelling errors and people who take bad photos — essential for a beauty blog. You aren’t guilty of either. I love how you break down reviews, too, giving a numerical scale on longevity, etc.

    1. Bad photos on beauty blogs literally drive me nuts so I will do anything to try to produce a focused, well-lit photo and I have my husband proof-read for mistakes! =P Thank you!

  16. An aspect that makes me return to this blog on a daily basis are your thorough reviews with quality photos, the combination of high end/unique/drugstore products, and that you balance both picture based and video tutorials. As someone who doesn’t enjoy watching video tutorials, I like that the option is there.

  17. Girl… you could just post close up pics of your eye makeup regularly and I would still come look every day. Your blog showcases your talent and you present it beautifully!

  18. Hi Ashley! I follow you on Instagram, starleighmae, and today is the first time I have clicked your page and I’m stoked! I clicked it because of your most recent post. I love love love the step by step. Your style and colors are all looks I love so I’ll definitely now be an avid reader! The only thing I’d like to see is maybe once in awhile like a, “Beauty on a Budget”, segment. I love your work but unfortunately I’m a broke bitch lol I can’t afford the good stuff (

    1. Yay! So glad you decided to check out my blog, girl! I’ve been trying to incorporate more drugstore products into the blog lately and I’ll be sure to keep at that. I’ll try to come up with some more budget friendly posts too.

  19. Hey Ashley!

I just found your blog tonight from looking for a few eye PICTORIALS and I seriously appreciate them and your honesty!

It’s refreshing to see a genuine person doing something they like and wanting ASKING for the opinions of their following. And I personally like a mixture of pictures and videos. They each have their purpose and when trying to “re-make” a look I see I personally find the pictorials more handy.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Meg! Thank you so, so much for all the kind words!! I love doing this but I know what my readers want matter a lot so I try to listen. =)

  20. I found your blog looking for colorful eye makeup ideas on Google. I came across a Sugarpill look you did (I think it was the burning heart palette review) and I was like “Wow, this girl’s makeup is fantastic!”. I’m about to follow you, and I don’t think I’ll be looking back xD I really like that your reviews are honest and also LOVE your swatches and pictures. So, there’s nothing I would change. Greetings from Latin America!

    1. Wowww, thank you so, so much for all of your sweet words!! I’m so happy that you like my looks and my blog. Warms my heart! <3
