Ombre Lips Tutorial

Yesterday I was in the mood for a sort of summer inspired ombre lip so I made this quick ombre lips tutorial.

What you’ll need:

Two shades of lipsticks, one for the outside color, one for the inside color. One should be significantly lighter than the other. I used NYX Matte Lipstick in Sweet Pink and Hippie Chic.

A lip liner similar to the lipstick you want to be your outside color.

(Optional) Gloss. I used NYX Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel.

I inadvertently ending up using all NYX products to create this lip look. I kind of have a love affair with NYX, after all.

Prep your lips – I started by first exfoliating my lips in a mixture of coconut oil and sugar. I then rinsed off that mixture and applied a thin layer of coconut oil to my lips. I waited a while for the oil to adsorb then wiped off the excess before beginning.

Line your lips – Pick a liner similar to the shade of lipstick you’ll be using as your outside color.  Using a lip liner can help prevent fading and feathering while also making it easier to stay within your actual lip lines when applying your lipstick. As you can see in the picture, I usually fill in the corners of my mouth completely with lip liner as corners tend to fade easily. Filling in part of your lips completely with a liner gives you an extra layer of lipstick protection!

Apply your outside color -You want this shade to be the most concentrated in the corners of your lips as well as along the area where you used your lip liner. Next gently fade the color inwards using a lip brush or by dabbing it with your finger. Try to leave the center and inner portion of your lips bare.  I’m using my darker shade as the outside color but if you want an Asian inspired “bitten” look, try using your lighter shade as the outside color.

Apply your inner color – Use your inner shade to cover the bare portion of you lips as well applying it over some of the outer color. I’m putting my inner color on a large portion of my lips which will make the ombre effect more subtle. If you want a more dramatic ombre, keep your inner color more concentrated to the center of your lips.

Purse your lips together – Press your lips together a few times and even roll them around a little to blend your two colors together. You may need to make some adjustments or blend certain spots by dabbing the area with your finger.

All done –  Now your ombre lips should be all done and looking fabulous!

Optional gloss – I was in the mood for glossy lips so I added a little of NYX’s Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel, focusing it on the center of my lips.
