I was recently given the opportunity to try out quite a few products from City Color Cosmetics. I’d never heard of City Color Cosmetics before but I decided I’d like to give them a try and see what they’re all about. The product I’m most excited to share with you guys is a few shades from their Be Matte Gems Lipstick ($4.99). I’m a sucker for weird lip colors so these were the first thing that grabbed my attention!
OVERALL REVIEW: 7
Packaging: White plastic tube with clear lid. Lipstick retracts fully into the tube. 6/10
Longevity: Above average although these will need a touch up after eating. 7/10
Application: These sometimes skip over lips and you may need a couple of coats to get them to look perfect. 7/10
Texture: Matte and a little on the drier side. 8/10
I’ve had time to wear these shades a few times already but I’ll be making another post with several other products from City Color Cosmetics once I get a chance to try them all out properly!
These lipsticks, as the name suggests, have a very matte finish! The texture of the City Color Cosmetics Be Matte Gems Lipsticks reminds me of MAC’s Retro Matte finish lipsticks, such as Ruby Woo, so they’re quite matte and dry. Despite the fact that matte lipsticks in general are on the drier side, these didn’t leave me feeling like they were sucking moisture from my lips and were actually quite comfortable to wear. I’m all about some matte lipsticks but if you have seriously dry lips, you may want to think twice before trying such a matte formula.
These colors lasted well throughout the day! Even though they will likely need touched up after eating or something, they surprised me by how well they stayed put through meals. I have this fear of eating with black lipstick on then ending up with black smeared all over my face by the end of the meal & messed up black (or any crazy color lipstick) is not a pretty thing. Onyx held up pretty much like a champ, despite a little fading in the center of my lips.
The drier texture of the City Color Cosmetics Be Matte Gems Lipsticks causes them to pull and skip a little over your lips with the first swipe but glides easily over itself for a second swipe. You will likely need 2-3 swipes for these lipsticks to get them fully opaque.
As far as the packaging goes, it does it’s job. The lipsticks retract fully into the tube so you won’t accidentally scrape them and I haven’t had one break or lose a lid in my purse yet. I’m not super keen on the white plastic packaging as I feel like it looks kind of cheap but I suppose that’s a personal preference.
Quite happy to have City Color Cosmetic’s Onyx added to my collection! As far as budget friendly black lipstick goes, Onyx is a very solid option!
NYX Chambord is similarly priced at $6 but in my opinion, Onyx is the more wearable and longer lasting option. Chambord is too creamy for a black, slides around too easily and looks pretty terrible after trying to eat with it on but Onyx has some nice staying power! It held up surprisingly well during meals and while it did need some touching up afterwards, it was far less than with Chambord. Onyx seems to be a tiny bit more creamy than the other two shades and is my favorite of the bunch.
Emerald is a really pretty and unusual color that has this way of making a girl feel like a mermaid! A lovely shade of green but this color was the most difficult to work with out of the group. It wasn’t too bad but it did take a little working with to try to get it to be opaque and solid.
Emerald is a decent, budget friendly alternative to Melt Cosmetic’s Blow but Emerald is noticeably lighter in color and not as well pigmented.
I thought Amber seemed like a more rusty color at first, but once I applied it to my lips it just looked like a lovely shade of orange! Really loving this shade for Summer.
For the rest of this look, I paired Onyx with Anastasia Beverly Hills Glisten, Makeup Geek Peach Smoothie & Rapunzel, Sugarpill Love +, Melt Cosmetics Dark Matter & Enigma and Lit Cosmetics Glitter in Hello Sunshine for my eyes.
All in all, City Color Cosmetics Be Matte Gems Lipsticks are an awesome, budget-friendly way to add some fun lip colors to your life! 😀 If you want to try these (or any product) from City Color Cosmetics, be sure to use coupon code SultrySuburbia for 10% off!
